Kundalini is generally defined as “the energy of awareness”. Kundalini is concentrated prana, or life energy, that is stored at the base of the spine. Although all forms of yoga work towards raising the kundalini in some way, Kundalini Yoga, as taught by yogi Bhajan, is the science of raising the kundalini. When he brought Kundalini Yoga to America in 1969, Yogi Bhajan formed two organizations. These organizations are 3HO & KRI, the Kundalini Research Institute. Although this is considered to be an introductory course, both beginners & experienced yogis will receive benefit. Through the 7 weeks of this course we will explore- • balancing the body internally & externally through asana, diet, & elimination exercises • the practice & purpose of meditation • the history & use of mantra • the importance of the breath, pranayama (breath exercise), & lung strengthening with respect to energy & living • the purpose, use, & practice of bhandas (body locks) in order to direct & facilitate the flow of energy and the raising of kundalini. • the importance of the spine, its general relationship with the chakra system, & specific yoga practices that open & facilitate overall spinal health • the importance of the navel center in relationship to coordinating the balance of creation & elimination energies in the body • a basic introduction to the chakra system with respect to Kundalini Yoga • and yogic lifestyle.
