Join us for our latest lecture in our "A Note on Opera" series as we look at Jules Massenet’s “Werther.“

Not only has Goethe's "Faust" inspired different opera adaptations, but so have many of his other works. His intensely Romantic novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers [The Sorrows of young Werther] is the basis for this opera by French composer Jules Massenet. Not only is "Werther" considered Massenet's masterpiece, it also is quite faithful to Goethe's novel. It’s an intimate work with the tragedy of unrequited love leading to suicide played out in a world unaware and uncaring.
