Join us for our latest lecture in our "A Note on Opera" series as we look at Richard Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ [The Mastersingers of Nuremberg].

Wagner's "Die Walküre" [The Valkyrie] is the 2nd opera in the composer's monumental tetralogy, "The Ring of the Nibelung." In "Walküre" the transition begins from a world dominated by gods to one dominated by humans.. Wagner's music can be monumental and intimate, nowhere more so than in "Die "Walküre." For it is in "Die Walküre" that we watch a family slowly disintegrate, as siblings reuniting leads to tragedy, a marriage unravels, and the towering figure of the god Wotan must sacrifice his dearest children.

Course to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required.
