A Cappella Books says
Since his award-winning debut collection of stories, LAST DAYS OF THE DOG-MEN, Brad Watson continues to expand past the bounds of the Southern pastoral in his new novel, MISS JANE. Inspired by the true story of his own great-aunt, he explores the life of Miss Jane Chisolm, born in rural, early-twentieth-century Mississippi with a genital birth defect that would stand in the way of the central “uses” for a woman in that time and place―namely, sex and marriage. A story fixed in both time and place, Watson teeters on the tension of the South, its history, sexuality, gender roles, marriage, and what a woman can do when she is free to satisfy only herself.

“[The] complexity and drama of Watson’s gorgeous work here is life's as well: Sometimes physical realities expand us, sometimes trap; sometimes heroism lies in combating our helplessness, sometimes in accepting it. A writer of profound emotional depths, Watson does not lie to his reader, so neither does his Jane."
--Amy Grace Loyd, The New York Times Book Review

On Tuesday, August 2, at 6PM, Watson reads from, discusses, and signs copies of his book at A Cappella Books. This event is free and open to the public.
