Congregation Bet Haverim says
CBH@30: “In The Beginning”
A multi-media live documentary

Thirty years ago -- June 24, 1986 – the Georgia Secretary of State registered Congregation Bet Haverim as a corporation. It was the culmination of work that began a year earlier when a handful of gay men and lesbians set out to take their
place in Atlanta’s Jewish community.

“In The Beginning” is the story of these quiet revolutionaries -- and some not so quiet -- who bucked the establishment. It is the story of visionaries whose courage, compassion, determination and idealism would have a lasting impact.

“In The Beginning,” a one-time only presentation created by CBH members and Emmy Award-winning producer Andy Segal, will showcase long-forgotten documents from CBH’s archives, videotaped interviews and a panel discussion with early members. It will chronicle both the uphill battles and the joyous milestones that made CBH what it is today.

Find out:
• Why the Torah was originally stored in a golf bag.
• Which supportive local rabbi offered his help in the early days.
• How the Reconstructionists closed the deal.
• Why CBH’s softball team was called The Burning Butches.
• How straight families found a place in a gay shul.
• Why coming late to Shabbat services is known as “pulling a Geller.”
• Who was facetiously described as “a gay man trapped in a lesbian’s body.”

“In The Beginning” is the story of Bet Haverim’s heritage, the story of a House of Friends becoming a family. And it is nothing short of inspiring.
