Bike-In Movie!! Continuin' our exploration of outsiders and folk artists, SOPO's long-running bike-in movie will once again take place at the ol' neighborhood doggie bar, Park Grounds Cafe.
Come on down and see two rarely-screened underground legends of Southern non-fiction film, "The Dancing Outlaw (1991)" and "It's Grits! (1978)".
"THE DANCING OUTLAW: This unscripted, strikingly unique documentary film is a revealing portrait of the nearly extinct "Hillbilly" culture that focuses on Mountain Dancer Jesco White's uphill battle against abject poverty, drug abuse, petty crime and mental instability. In his struggle to live up to his father's legacy as the finest mountain dancer in Appalachia, he leans on Jesus, Elvis Presley, and his wife, Norma Jean. 30 minutes."
"IT'S GRITS: With all the native wit, rib tickling humor and ability to see what makes the South the South found in the literary classics of Southern writers like Mark Twain, documentary filmmaker Stan Woodward helps us discover the common thread that connects the South’s people across all social, economic, political and racial boundaries – Grits! “Grits is us” - or, if we are to be grammatically correct, “Grits are us” - could easily be the title of this uproariously funny and at the same time insightful and poignant personal documentary. 45 minutes."
Come early to SOPO for a wheel-truin' lesson. We'll cover basic wheel repair - spoke replacement, rim sanding/cleaning, cassette and freewheel removal and, of course, truing. 5:30pm. Suggested donation of $5, but nobody turned away for lack of funds!! 5:30 in the ol' shop at 586 Woodward Ave!!
