Defending Our Communities In 2017 & Beyond: In Honor Of El Hajj says
El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, aka Malcolm X, is one of the most significant personalities of the 20th century. Fifty-two years after his martyrdom in New York City on February 21, 1965, he remains one of the most universally recognized symbols of courageous resistance in the world today.

The Aafia Foundation, Inc. (a Metropolitan Washington, DC, based human rights organization) began a "Defending Our Communities" initiative on May 16, 2016.

On Thursday, February 23rd, the year-long initiative will come to Atlanta, Georgia, in partnership with Muslim Progressive Values -Atlanta Chapter, The Malcom X Grassroots Movement-Atlanta, and a number of other organizations.

The program will include thought-provoking panel discussions on the multi-faceted challenges facing Black, Muslim, and immigrant communities; with special focus on the ever expanding PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX, and the epidemic of violence in many of our communities.

We will examine ways in which we (ourselves) can play a critical and proactive role in defending and healing our communities as we strive to extract important lessons from history and cross-cultural experiences. Our objective will be the construction of a unified wall of resistance against a machine that systemically devalues and violates life.

The program will comprise a total of five dynamic panels involving former political prisoners, activists, a lawyer, and a family member of a prisoner. (More details of speakers will be posted.)

EVENT SPONSORS: Muslim Progressive Values, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement of Atlanta, Georgia State University -The Department of African-American Studies, The International Action Center, The Self Care Agency, Sustainable Wellness, Ahmadiyya Muslims GA, & many more.

The program is FREE and open to the public.
Donations will be appreciated and will go towards The Aafia Foundation, MXGM, & Muslim Progressive Values.

The Helen M. Aderhold Learning Center, a classroom building on the campus of Georgia State University, is located in the historic Fairlie Poplar District of Downtown Atlanta.
