High Museum of Art says
2015 David C. Driskell Prize Recipient, Kirsten Pai Buick, Ph.D., explores the relationship between Mary Edmonia Lewis and her faith. As the first internationally renowned artist of both Native American and African American descent, Lewis was also Catholic during a time of great tumult—not only for Native Americans and African Americans, but also for Catholics. Though much can be made of the patronage Lewis received from fellow Catholics and of her faith-related artworks, there is still a great deal to be discovered about the geographical contexts of her Catholicism: the antebellum United States, Rome, and London.
