Have you ever thought about reading your favorite Sanskrit mantras and sutras in their original form? Pronouncing the names of yoga poses correctly, without having to rely on the often vague or incorrect English transliterations?

Almost all original Hindu scriptures are composed in the Sanskrit language and written in Devanāgarī (deva = god, nāgarī = city), an ancient script that has become one of the most used and adopted writing systems in the world.

In this six week course you will learn to read, pronounce and write the Devanāgarī alphabet, as well as common Sanskrit words and phrases in the context of Yoga and the Vedas. Together we will read and write Sanskrit mantras, the names of the major Hindu deities, and short passages from ancient scriptures such as the Rigveda and Bhagavad Gita. You will also learn how to write your own name (Sanskrit or Western) in Devanāgarī.

The course includes lectures about the origin and history of Sanskrit and Devanāgarī, as well as extensive handouts. Some materials, such as a special pen, will need to be purchased in advance. You will receive a course syllabus with class outline, assignment schedule and a list of required materials after sign-up.

This six week course is a deep commitment to personal study, and it will include homework — please be prepared to spend an additional two to three hours of your time per week with study and practice for a successful learning experience.

Note: This course is part 1 of a progressive series and will only involve the Devanāgarī script. An overview of the Sanskrit language will be offered in the second part of the series, for which this course will be a prerequisite.

Please contact Amala if you have any questions about the content of this course (for pricing or any other inquiries, please call the front desk).
