The LOW Museum Presents: #Masculinity
“Masculinity” denotes a combination of different elements, both human and nonhuman -- behavioral (strength, violence, aggression), bodily (penises, muscles), aesthetic (dark, heavy, sharp) -- which do not necessarily or naturally belong together. Unified, these elements characterize a force. We perform masculinity; our bodies register its effects. The presence of masculinity is thick -- yet difficult to pinpoint. It crumbles when contested.
How do we ‘prove’ masculinity, and how do we measure it? How do we interact with masculinity? How does masculinity operate in our daily lives? And how do we subvert its effects?
The LOW Museum is seeking artworks and objects in any medium that materialize and codify our concepts of masculinity and play with its effects. We are looking for investigations into masculinity in its various forms, such as:
● social media (ex. Grindr, Facebook, the valuation of masculinity, assumptions of butch/femme dynamics)
● space (ex. portrayal of homo-erotic or heteronormative intimate spaces)
● commodities and advertising
● socio-political institutions (ex. gender in policing, education, the workplace)
● cultural institutions (ex. norms and bodily & social interactions in sports)
● performance (ex. masculinity as gains in cultural capital)
● social interaction (ex. gender policing and power dynamics)
● gender presentation (ex. women and men’s fashion)
