This meeting and all subsequent meetings will be generally facilitated by Amanda Mills (Murmur). She will also assist in coordinating the zine exhibit and panel. Amanda Mills’ educational background is in English Rhetoric. She has been involved in zine-making since elementary school, including an internship with the Denver Zine Library, teaching a weekly class on zine-making at her high school, forming the Atlanta Zine Library in college, and organizing the Atlanta Zine Fest. Her current project, Murmur, is a community resource for DIY and ephemeral media.

Design with Kat Nelson.
Tuesday, April 21st.
5 - 6:30 PM
Must be enrolled (can enroll at any time, max 12).

Kat Nelson works with the Low Museum, a gallery space focused on complicating distinctions between high and low art via exhibitions and dialogue. She has a design role in many zines and local tape releases. Her educational background is in philosophy, and her design skills are self-taught. Kat will showcase her design work, highlighting how she transforms other peoples’ words and concepts. We will discuss how design and layout heighten the textual message.

Using examples from the Atlanta Zine Library, we will discuss the various ways that zinesters use design and layout. These example zines will range from traditional cut-and-paste forms to professional graphic design themes. We will discuss how to choose imagery to support one’s written words. Collaboratively, we will share things that stand out to us from the example zines. Using a prompt, everyone--including facilitators--will have time to design a page out of text that is provided for them. This text will be from the public domain. We will also provide thematic illustrations and cut-outs. Attendees will share their work for feedback and encouragement. Everyone is then expected to work on their perzines at home and bring them to next week’s meeting.
