See the inaugural lighting installation festival, Awakening, in the Rose of the North. Watch as Chiang Mai’s Chang Moi-Tha Pae creative quarters come alive with Polar-Rise-themed light installations and digital arts.

Chang Moi-Tha Pae, situated to the northeast of the city center along the banks of the Ping River, is one of the oldest trading areas, steeped in the 700-year history of Chiang Mai. The streets and alleys of this neighborhood act as veins and bloodlines, weaving through the lives of its residents and housing longstanding businesses and merchants.

Explore 17 art pieces at 13 locations, from Ratchawong Warehouse to Kitipanit, created by both local and international artists. The installations light up nightly from today (Nov 10) until Nov 19.

Awakening Chiang Mai is proudly supported by Chang and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and is endorsed by Alliance Française de Chiang Mai and Bangkok Airways.

📍Ratchawong Warehouse

Chang Moi is Chiang Mai’s old quarter that has been slowly revived, getting back on the rising track. It’s warm, fun, and friendly — exactly what ‘friends’ are for — and what ALTERING +5 is trying to reflect. Inspired by Chang’s campaign that celebrates music and friendship, music-sensitive lighting projecting all over reflective surfaces aims to represent the atmosphere when friends are around: the more, the better — especially with music.

Just เต้น (Just Dance) is an interactive dance piece that seamlessly integrates audience members into the installation. Inspired by Chiang Mai's art community's dedication to community building, this piece encourages passersby to 'dance,' using their bodies to control 3D models within audio-reactive environments. The installation not only fosters community engagement but also offers a unique outlet for emotional expression and stress relief through dance and technology.

tomorrow.Lab

📍Tai Toon Baan

Tomorrow.Lab collective drew inspiration from the worshipping ritual at Chiang Mai City Pillar, where locals offer flowers to wish for good fortune for themselves and their families. They interpreted this tradition, juxtaposed with the 2000s game Plumbob, into an interactive art piece that visualizes your spoken words as virtual flowers. The creator hopes this artwork will metaphorically spread flowers throughout the city, symbolizing positivity and good wishes.

Human - Dreams - Cities are three inseparable elements. Humans dream. They dream of creating cities. And cities thrive civilizations. This ambition is natural to all humans. It’s the driving legacy that goes down from one generation to another, and drives many of our actions before we even realize it.

Take a break from it all at this serene spot, where you can sit, breathe, relax, and contemplate to achieve ‘Sa-Ti’ (consciousness) – something we all need, yet often lack in our busy lives. In the midst of today’s chaos, practicing mindfulness is essential. By being conscious and aware, we can cultivate wisdom to navigate life's challenges.

The long-life ceremony (สืบชะตา) is a Northern ritual aimed at blessing a long and blissful life. In essence, it attempts to influence destiny through ceremonies and offerings. The artist reinterprets this ritual, incorporating its distinctive arrangements, into a lighting piece. This artwork showcases the effort to transform the rigid into the fluid and the stable into the dynamic—all within the framework of the flow of time. Visitors are encouraged to place the ceremonial thread on their heads, allowing them to reconnect with the original ritual, albeit through a different medium.

Talaew," which means "hawk's eye" in the Northern dialect, is a symbol of local ritual for protected areas. It has also been used to safeguard wherever it hangs from disasters. This art show drew inspiration from Talaew Moryam, deconstructing it and presenting it differently in light form. It invites you to immerse yourself, feeling protected through the eyes and the mind.
