This Saturday (14 July), one of Bangkok’s best omakase joints Sushi Zo hosts a special sake-and-wine pairing dinner offering fresh sushi bites alongside sake and wine selections from respected makers Tsuji Hoten and Issara Winery.

Osaka-born sushi legend Keizo Seki introduced a more delicate approach to the American concept of raw fish and rice rolls when he opened the first Sushi Zo in West LA. The omakase-style eatery earned a Michelin star in 2009. After opening another branch in Los Angeles and one in New York, the much-praised sushi brand is set to raise the bar in Bangkok’s fine-dining scene with the opening of its fourth establishment (and the first Asian outpost) on bustling Wireless Road.

The special drink-pairing dinner features fresh sushi and nigiri bites with “Zo-style” treatment that elevates the fresh sea creatures with ponzu and soy sauce. Expect around 18 bites of scrumptious offerings such as braised Hokkaido abalone served with abalone liver sauce, the fatty Chiba kinmedai, sweet shrimp with a drizzling of yuzu juice and soy sauce-brushed Hokkaido sea urchin.

Five sake bottles will be served to accompany the meal like the Gozenshu sparkling sake that’s made with omachi rice from Okinawa and boasts honey and yoghurt-y notes. Bottles from Issaya Winery like Issara Estate Rosé 2016 have been selected to balance with the scrumptious bites.

14 July, Sushi Zo at Athenee Tower, Ploenchit Road, 0 2168 8490. BTS Ploenchit. B7000 (B2500 with wine pairing)
