While the majority of Time Out Market's chefs and operators have needed no introduction to Boston-area foodies, there have been a few who until recently have flown under the local culinary radar. Vincent Turco, the man behind Gelato & Chill, is one such example. The self-described "food snob" is an artisanal gelato master—gelatiere—who is committed to traditional methods and uses additive-free, local ingredients whenever possible. He has spent the last few years creating new gelato-making techniques, and Time Out Market visitors are the lucky ones who get to be the first to taste Turco's edible creations.

"The reason I started Gelato & Chill was to bring the freshest, most authentic Italian gelato to New England," explains Turco. "Our cream and milk flavors are made with the freshest local dairy products; the cream is 44% butter fat, and we use only fresh seasonal fruits to make our sorbets. We never use any frozen pastes or artificial flavorings or ingredients. We use fresh, local hand-dipped ricotta for our Ricotta & Fig gelato, and we source peaches and blueberries from local orchards and farms. Our pistachios come from Sicily, considered the best in the world."

During summer's hottest days, Turco's stand was among the busiest at the Market. Guests have tasted the difference, with many saying Gelato & Chill churns out the best frozen treats in all of the Fenway.

"We are bringing a taste of Italy to Time Out Market patrons; this is real Italian small-batch gelato, made using award-winning recipes from an Italian gelato master," Turco proudly declares. "I drive my suppliers crazy to find the best ingredients available. I'm on the phone constantly with Italian purveyors and other Italian gelato maestros, looking for the next new flavor creation."

By trying Gelato & Chill you're checking out one of our picks for the best sweet treats at the market, as well as one of the best ways to stay cool at the market. Take one bite and we think you'll agree—it's hard to be chill about Turco's first-class gelato and sorbet.
