Beer, glorious beer.
Picture this: It's a hot day in Cape Town, you're done with your responsibilities for the day and now it's time to chill with a cold one in hand.
Is there anything better in life?
Well, maybe, but for the sake of this article we will say there isn't, especially when you consider just how highly beer ranks in the South African context when the fire is lit and the braai commences.
Cape Town beer's global recognition
'Beer guy and marathon runner' on Instagram, Alan (@beerwithalan), loves his beer. He loves it so much that he's tried roughly 3,200 brews from all around the world. Lucky guy, but you may need a Babalas Rescue or two...
Clearly, Alan knows a good beer when he tastes one, so it was great to see that he has shown some love for a South African beer brewed right here in Cape Town. Well, used to be brewed...
So, what is the beer in question?
It's Devil's Peak Beer Company's Capenhagen, which was created in collaboration with Danish brewers Mikkeller seven years ago. The beer was brewed using local Southern Passion and African Queen hops for a very limited period.
How Alan managed to get his hands on a can of this New England IPA in 2025, I don't know, but we'll take the Cape Town shoutout from him, even if he called our city, "South Africa's Capital City" (yes, it's one of three, but he said it like it's the only one).
You can watch Alan's full feature on the beer here, with the original Mikkeller Facebook post below.
Devil's Peak Beer Company
For those unfamiliar with Devil's Peak Beer Company, founded in 2012, the mission was always to "brew beer that stands apart" - and they've done just that.
Constantly creating new and inventive beers - just like the Capenhagen, Devil's Peak has become much loved thanks to their ability to shake things up and provide their fans with not just the staples, but fresh ideas in a can or bottle.
You can try the full range of Devil's Peak beers at Taproom Salt River, located at 150 Cecil Road, Salt River.
