Hiking at night comes with added risks, as two incidents over the weekend show. Follow these guidelines and advice.
Cape Town's natural beauty is a magnet for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Popular trails like Lion’s Head and Signal Hill are known for spectacular sunrise and sunset experiences that showcase the city’s panoramic coastline views.
However, two incidents over the weekend have prompted South African National Parks (SANParks) to flag the need for hikers to be more careful while out and about after dark.
A group of seven hikers in their teens and early twenties were found navigating the trails at around 8 pm on Friday. In another incident, a solo hiker was found after dark on Signal Hill without a phone or funds for transport.
While full moon hikes are extremely popular, drawing large crowds, especially along Lion's Head - SANParks advised hikers should continue to keep the following safety guidelines in mind:

Remember, with increased rainfall, the city's trails become more precarious during the winter months between May and July. Winter hiking does, however, reward you with mini-waterfalls dotted along the route. Make the most of it, and enjoy responsibly.
