With the public holidays coming thick and fast at the moment, many have a long weekend coming up - if you remembered to take Friday off, that is.
Thursday, 1 May, is Workers' Day in South Africa. The public holiday has been observed since 1994 and 'serves both as a celebration of workers’ rights and as a reminder of the critical role that trade unions, the Communist Party and other labour organisations played in the fight against apartheid,' writes the South African Government's website.
If you are looking to explore Cape Town this public holiday and try something different to your normal routine, below we have some ideas for you to consider.
First Thursdays

Tap into your cultural side on Thursday, 1 May, as the ever-popular First Thursdays shows off all things artsy and tasty in Cape Town. Explore Cape Town's best galleries like The Artists Gallery and Eclectica Contemporary as they stay open later than usual, before grabbing a bite to eat and a tasty drink or two at the likes of Tjing Tjing House and Ramenhead. If you fancy trying a different First Thursdays experience, the Stellenbosch edition launches on Thursday and it promises to be a jol of note.

Hit the caves... for some golf

With schools closed, you'll need to think of something to do with the little ones this 'long weekend'. Cave Golf is a super cool activity for the family and can be found at the V&A Waterfront and in Simon's Town. It can be challenging, but is also really fun, with the light-up balls adding to the adventure of playing golf inside a cave! Once you're done nailing those putts, both locations have a Scratch Patch, which the kids love as they can find a hidden treasure or two (play along, parents).
Grab a 2 for 1 special on Thursday

Why not take advantage of a special on a meal out this Workers' Day? From a delicious prego roll to burgers, sushi and more, there are a few options for you to take advantage of. Our guide to the best 2 for 1 restaurant specials in Cape Town also covers other days of the week, so even if you aren't keen on dining out on Thursday, plan ahead with the other great specials for next week.
Explore Cape Town like a Mayor

The City of Cape Town's Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, loves exploring the city. From gatsbys to the great outdoors, the Mayor himself has shared with Time Out Cape Town his favourite ways to eat, chill and explore in the Mother City. So, why not do as the Mayor does and follow in his footsteps with his Local Intel guide...
