When the winter cold fronts hit the Mother City, many people reach for their wooly slippers. But savvy Capetonians reach for their weekend bags and puffer jackets instead.

Winter is officially the Western Cape’s ‘secret season’, and without the crowds of summer, hotels and guesthouses across the Cape drop their rates to fill their rooms. Which means it’s prime time for locals to get out and explore, without breaking the budget. Besides, it’s just rain, right?

While the odd cold front may make the mercury fall, that’s just an excuse to light the fire and open a bottle of something red. Or, lace up those boots and enjoy the fynbos when its most lush and green.

Whether you’re looking to soak in a wood-fired hot tub – we’ve got the best hot tubs getaways over here – while the rain patters on a canvas roof, or find a five-star fireside sanctuary in the heart of the city, we’ve tracked down the most enticing offers for the winter.

Haul out your weekend bags, check the diary, and hit the road...

The Vineyard Hotel, Newlands

If you’re after a sneaky staycation in the city, The Vineyard Hotel’s ‘Take-A-Breather’ winter special offers a 15 percent discount on stays of two nights or more, and is valid until 31 August, 2026. Your stay has to include a Saturday night though.

This historic riverside hotel is a haven for foodies, featuring Italian-style cuisine at Morii and afternoon tea by the fireside in the Garden Lounge. If the weather plays ball, don’t miss the guided garden walk through the 200-year-old estate. If not, take a swim in the heated indoor pool while watching the rain fall over Table Mountain. Nestled in leafy Newlands, the hotel is perfectly located for brisk walks in Newlands Forest or a morning exploring the nearby Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

Dorp Hotel, Bo-Kaap

Set above Bo-Kaap with sweeping views towards Table Mountain and the city below, Dorp Hotel’s art-filled rooms and eclectic interiors make it the kind of place built for slow days. Take a lazy breakfast. Maybe wander down into Bo-Kaap. Return for a long lunch. Settle into the deep couches in the lounge. Watch the weather sweep across the mountain. Heaven. And Dorp Hotel’s winter offer gives guests 20% off the best available rate when staying four nights or more. Valid until 31 August 2026.

The Cellars-Hohenort, Constantia

Leafy and luxurious, The Cellars-Hohenort feels like a country getaway in the heart of the city. Tucked into the kind of Constantia calm that only old money can buy, this is the hotel for long breakfasts, garden walks and a weekend at a gentle pace. The Hohenort Haven package adds a few worthwhile extras to the usual five-star stay, including wine on arrival, a stocked minibar, a full English breakfast and a R500 nightly credit to spend at the restaurant, bar, spa or boutique. And with Constantia’s wine farms and mountain walks close by, it’s an easy winter reset without leaving Cape Town.

President Hotel, Bantry Bay

We have always raved about the hotel pool at the President Hotel, and even if the water’s a bit chilly, it’s a great option for a winter staycation with sea air, sunset views and hotel buzz. Set between Bantry Bay and Sea Point, the Sea Point Prom is pretty mch on the doorstep, and works especially well for families.

The local residents’ offer includes up to 30% off when booking direct, with possible perks like an early check-in, late check-out and room upgrade, all subject to availability. Kids under 12 also stay and eat breakfast for free, which sweetens the deal.

Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, Oudekraal

If you’re into planning ahead, The Twelve Apostles has an interesting special: "Pre-Pay and Save". With this offer, you’ll get a 15 percent discount if you book and pay 60 days in advance. Or, book for more than three nights and get 20 percent off the stay. Either way, you’ll start with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine on arrival, followed by a daily buffet breakfast where you will want to tuck into the platters of fresh oysters. If the sun is out, the mountain trails are right behind the hotel, or book a seat in the 16-seater private cinema with complimentary popcorn. The hotel is also famous for its cocooning spa with heated thalassotherapy pools.

POD Camps Bay, Camps Bay

Want to treat yourself to a boutique stay on the Atlantic Seaboard? Here’s a deal for you. It might be winter, but POD Camps Bay’s seasonal promotion is a good reason to enjoy the seaside drama of the colder months. And the offer is simple: you get the cheapest of three nights free when you book direct, with the ‘stay-three-pay-two’ deal valid from 1 May to 31 August.

Tintswalo Atlantic, Hout Bay

For a winter stay that feels wild in the best possible way, Tintswalo Atlantic is hard to beat. Set right on the ocean at the foot of Chapman’s Peak, it’s one of those Cape Town hotels where the setting does most of the talking thanks to crashing waves and front-row Atlantic views.

The Tintswalo Atlantic Winter Warmer special is priced at R11 020 for two sharing and includes an overnight stay in one of the Island or Mountain Suites, plus a bottle of wine, sunset canapés and the cocktail of the day to enjoy by the in-room fireplace. Cape Co-living, Green Point

Here’s one that’s less about a cheeky getaway and more about making Cape Town your home-from-home. Cape Co-living leans hard into the digital nomad lifestyle, but when those European swallows head north for summer, it means there is plenty of room to spare. Which is why their ‘Local is Lekker’ promotion offers South African citizens a 50 percent discount on off-season stays all the way until October 2026. The catch? The minimum stay is a week (it’s three weeks in summer).

Use the code LOCALISLEKKER when booking to access a choice of high-end suites at their co-living/co-working house in Green Point. The space is specifically designed for remote workers, and rooms offer in-suite workspaces.

Steenberg Hotel & Spa, Constantia

Steenberg Hotel & Spa’s ‘Five Lives’ package is a comprehensive winter escape priced from R9320 per couple sharing per night. It’s valid until 30 September, 2026. That might sound like a lot of money, but listen to what you get: this deal features a 60-minute Holistic Touch massage with bubbly and truffles, a seasonal chef’s menu dinner at Tryn, and a bottle of Steenberg’s Five Lives Red Blend waiting in your room. Guests also enjoy a flagship wine tasting, daily breakfast at Tryn or Bistro Sixteen82, and use of estate bicycles to explore the 300-hectare farm. Located on the Constantia Wine Route, Steenberg Hotel is well-placed for visits to the Norval Foundation or a round on the estate’s golf course.

Tintswalo Boulders, Simon’s Town

A staycation with penguins included? Yes please! Overlooking Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town, Tintswalo Boulders is a perfect pick for families wanting a coastal break with character. The boutique villa has nine individually styled suites, some with fireplaces, private terraces and wide sea views. Best of all, you step straight from the property onto the Boulders boardwalk.

The Boulders winter special starts from R4830 per room per night and includes sunset canapés, a three-course family-style dinner and breakfast. Valid until 31 August 2026.

Great deals in the Winelands

Camp Canoe, Boschendal

Go glamping in the Franschhoek valley! Camp Canoe is offering South African residents 20% off all stays from May until the end of August 2026. Camp Canoe is one of our favourite winelands getaways; a quirky under-canvas bolthole with seven luxury tents set on the Boschendal estate. Each tent comes with a fireplace, private wood-fired hot tub, deck hammock and self-catering kitchen, making it the perfect pick for a cosy winter weekend that still feels outdoorsy. The tents can sleep four, but honestly, this is best as a romantic getaway for two.  And the money you save with the discount, you can happily go and spend at the Deli on Boschendal (their pasteis de nata are off the charts tasty) or on more Winelands exploring.

Spier Wine Farm, Stellenbosch

Spier’s ‘The Slow Season Stay’ is another comprehensive winter package, that starts from R23 325 for two people sharing, and is valid until 30 September, 2026. OK, that is also not cheap, but it includes a three-night stay for two, daily farm breakfasts, a 60-minute couple’s massage, and a seasonal wine and soup pairing in the tasting room.

The hotel – which was recently renovated and upgraded – offers a heated guest pool and access to an incredible collection of contemporary South African art scattered throughout the grounds. You can explore the farm on complimentary bicycles or take a self-guided walk through the wild Cape gardens. The surrounding Stellenbosch area offers plenty to see and do, from wine tasting to wandering historic streets.

The Robertson Small Hotel, Robertson

A chic choice in the Breede River valley is this historic gem in the heart of Robertson. With 11 rooms, this five-star boutique sanctuary is a design-lover's dream, featuring the wellness-focused Zest Spa, a chic poolside bar, and manicured gardens. Head out on olive oil tastings, river cruises on the Breede River and visits to the wine estates of Route 62. Or, stay in! Their GR8 Cape Escape deal offers a 25 percent discount when you stay 3 nights or more, as well as your choice of a R500 dinner voucher, or a complimentary 30-minute head, neck and shoulder massage during your stay!

The Grand Hotel, Robertson

Another fine option in the Breede River Valley, The Grand Hotel in Robertson has two winter offers on the table: 20% off stays from 1 May to 31 August 2026, or a ‘stay-three-pay-two deal’ valid through the same period. That ‘stay-three’ deal is available any day of the week, but you can’t combine it with other specials. The hotel is in the heart of town, but Robertson is perfectly positioned for exploring the wider Breede Valley’s wine estates, food experiences and easy Route 62 road-trips.

Maison Chablis, Franschhoek

Maison Chablis is keeping things simple this winter with a ‘stay-three-pay-two’ offer that includes breakfast. It’s an elegant guesthouse close to the village, which makes this offer less about the bundled inclusions and more about stretching your Winelands weekend into a proper escape.

Residence Vive La Vie, Franschhoek

Residence Vive La Vie is running winter-only discounted rates of between 15 and 20 percent off, for stays from May to August 2026, with complimentary breakfast daily, a welcome bottle of local wine, free Wi-Fi and secure parking included. There’s a minimum two-night stay over weekends, but why woldn’t you make a proper weekend of it? Residence Vive La Vie is close to the heart of the village, so you’re within walking distance of Franschhoek’s galleries, restaurants and some wine estates.

Cederberg Ridge Wilderness Lodge, Clanwilliam

Set on the fringes of this dramatic mountain landscape, Cederberg Ridge is offering a ‘Stay 3 Nights, Pay 50% for 3rd Night’ special for stays between May and July 2026.

It’s not a huge discount on the final price, but it does make this glorious wilderness escape a little more affordable. Best of all, the package includes all-inclusive dining and guided activities such as rock art tours and fynbos walks. The Cederberg area is particularly spectacular in winter, offering star-studded nights for astronomy enthusiasts and days filled with hikes through dramatic, weathered rock formations.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Gansbaai

When Michael Lutzeyer started Grootbos in 1996 with a dream of running ‘fynbos safaris’, many people thought he was mad. Well, he is a little mad, but in all the good ways. Either way, he was right, and over the past 30 years, Grootbos has become one of the country’s most celebrated lodges.

And now is the time for South African residents to take advantage of their excellent low-season rates. Until 30 September rates start from R8450 per person per night sharing. That’s a 50% discount on what you’ll pay in high-season! Rates also include a complimentary bottle of wine and a further 50% off spa treatments.

It’s not cheap, but it’s oh-so-worth the splurge for the experience. Your stay includes five-star dining, guided 4x4 fynbos safaris, and explorations of ancient sea caves along the coast. Each suite features a private deck and a cosy fireplace. Winter is also the best time for whale watching in Walker Bay, and the nearby town of Gansbaai offers world-famous marine adventures, including shark cage diving.

Gonana Guesthouse, Paternoster

The mercury may be in the teens, and swimming is only for the Wim Hof wannabes, but without the southeasterly wind, winter truly is the best time of year on the West Coast. Throw in the chance to spot whales, perhaps some spring flowers, and you should start packing your bags!

Up in Paternoster, that white-washed idyllic little getaway village, Gonana Guesthouse offers 25% off standard rates until September 2026 when you book with the code LOCALISLEKKER. This virtually off-grid retreat features Scandi-African décor that perfectly complements the misty West Coast views. Your stay includes a daily organic breakfast. Speaking of dining, be sure to book a seat well in advance at the world-renowned Wolfgat restaurant. Work up an appetite with a wander in nearby Cape Columbine Nature Reserve.

White Water Farm, Stanford

We love Stanford, with its mix of natural beauty and small-town charm. And now White Water Farm in Stanford is running a 20% off Winter 2026 special, valid until 31 August 2026. You’ll enjoy contemporary farm accommodation in the Klein River Valley, with a choice of cottages and suites, broad mountain views and a healthy dose of country calm. Don’t miss the excellent birding trips on the Klein River.

One Marine Drive, Hermanus

Perched close to the iconic Cliff Path in Hermanus, One Marine Drive is the pefect spot for a weekend of Overberg whale-watching, walks through the Fernkloof Nature Reserve or tasting your way through the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Their GR8 Cape Escape is a steal too: stay 3 nights or more at One Marine Drive Boutique Hotel this winter and enjoy 25 percent off. They’ll even include a complimentary 30-minute head, neck and shoulder massage during your stay!

De Wildeveldt, West Coast

A brand-new addition to the West Coast’s luxury landscape, De Wildeveldt's three contemporary cottages and bungalows share a 2000-hectare stretch of indigenous renosterveld and sandveld. It’s an hour from the city to De Wildeveldt, meaning you can swap Friday emails for a wood-fired hot tub at one of the two gorgeous new Veldt Bungalows. Thoroughly contemporary in style, and supremely well-equipped for a few nights away, there’s a wide deck for when the skies are blue and a cosy lounge with fireplace for when the rain rolls in. Near the two Veldt Bungalows is Thatch Cottage, a slightly more relaxed space, but with a similar modern West Coast aesthetic. And, because they’ve just opened, the early-birds can take advantage of a 20 percent discount when booking their Wild Opening Offer’. What are you waiting for?

AfriCamps, Western Cape

AfriCamps is offering three signature deals for the 2026 winter season: a ‘3-Night Special’ that saves you R500 on any three-night getaway between 3 May and 22 September; a ‘Single Parent Special’ (we love this!) where kids stay for free (using code SingleParentSpecial), and a ‘Golden Glamping’ discount of 15 percent for guests over 60 who book midweek stays (using code GoldenGlamping).

There are nine Africamps across the Western Cape, allowing you to explore from the Cederberg to the Winelands. Worried about the cold? Each luxury glamping tent features a private wood-fired hot tub, an indoor fireplace, outdoor braai and electric blankets.

Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa, Kleinmond

Come for the golf. Stay for the whales! That’s our advice for taking advantage of the ‘SunBreaks’ winter promotion for 2026 at Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa. The deal offers deluxe rooms from R3600 per night for a two-night stay, inclusive of a lavish breakfast and access to the African Rainforest Experience at the spa. And… two kids under-18 stay and eat breakfast for free when sharing with two adults.

This five-star resort overlooks the Bot River Lagoon and features the world-class Arabella golf course. During the winter months take a short drive to Hermanus for some of the world’s best land-based whale-watching, or head to the Stony Point penguin colony in Betty's Bay.

Abalone Hotel & Villas, Paternoster

The west coast is a dream in winter, with the chance for whale-watching and long walks on empty beaches, without the summer south-easterly winds. Abalone Hotel & Villas in Paternoster is offering a stay-three-pay-two midweek escape valid Sunday to Thursday until 31 July 2026. You’ll enjoy breakfast daily too. Beyond the hotel, there’s plenty to keep you busy: seafood restaurants (we love Noisy Oyster), beach walks and exploring nearby Cape Columbine Nature Reserve.

Villa Marine Guest House, Pringle Bay

For an escape that’s not too far from Cape Town (in fact, you can still see the city across False Bay) look no further than Villa Marine Guest House in Pringle Bay. It’s another stay-three-pay-two special, and it runs all the way to December, but the best rates (from R4535) are from 1 June – 31 August 2026. And who’s going to turn down a free night, right? Breakfast is included here too. The fynbos and beach charms of Pringle Bay are a selling point, but you’re also nice and close to Clarence Drive, Kogelberg Nature Reserve, Betty’s Bay’s penguins and Harold Porter Botanical Garden.
