In April they handed out suns; this Monday, it was soletes. After selecting the best restaurants in Portugal, the Repsol Guide has now highlighted “authentic, affordable places that are woven into the daily lives of the people who visit them”. Among the 285 spots awarded soletes in Portugal, there are cafés, pastry shops, kiosks and wine bars – and Cascais is on the map, with a total of eight distinctions.
In the Ice Cream Parlours category, the spotlight is on historic Santini, which now has dozens of shops across the country but was born in Cascais in 1949 (where it currently has six locations). As for Kiosks, two in Cascais picked up soletes on Monday night, 24 November, at a ceremony in Praça Beato, in Lisbon: Rocha do Inferno, at Boca do Inferno, and the kiosk in Parque Morais, in Parede.
Also in Parede, Padaria do Miguel was recognised – it opened in 2021 and quickly became a go-to spot, thanks to its organic flours and slow fermentation methods; Pastelaria Ribeiro, a classic with more than 100 years of history, still run by the Nunes family; and Avó Maria, a small pizzeria awarded in the Fast Good category.
Then there’s Sacolinha, a pastry shop born in Bairro do Rosário in 1986 (and which has since opened four more locations in Cascais and several others around Greater Lisbon), and the unpretentious Cantinho das Lulas, in São Domingos de Rana, which – beyond its squid – is famous for its cod, octopus and fish roe.
The Cascais restaurants with Repsol Guide suns are Fortaleza do Guincho, led by chef Gil Fernandes, and Maré, by José Avillez. Also recommended are Sult, Monte Mar, Porto de Santa Maria, and Furnas do Guincho.
