Time Out says

Wander away from the din of Lake Shore Drive and into the shadow of the Lincoln Park Zoo, and you will stumble upon one of Chicago’s most treasured architectural marvels: the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool. Enshrined behind Prairie-style gates, this hidden sanctuary is a triumph of both design and nature.

Lily pads blanket a thumbprint-shaped pond where dragonflies and migratory birds zip through thickets of cottonwood, all under the watchful gaze of a stately stone pavilion. To step beyond the entrance is to enter a hallowed space where the thrum of the city is supplanted by birdsong and lapping water, and the sunlight streaming through lacy hackberry leaves seems to obliterate any worry that may have followed you to the gate.

For several years, however, this local gem remained hidden from public view. In 2023, the Lincoln Park Conservancy closed the Lily Pool for major renovations to address the wear caused by a steady stream of visitors and the Midwest's temperamental weather. What began as a project to replace the battered wooden pavilions soon expanded in scope as carpenters and conservationists worked to preserve the site's historical integrity. After rebuilding the pavilions, plumping the thickets of native flora and recalibrating the crown-jewel waterfall, the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool finally reopened in late 2025. Today, it once again welcomes visitors from dawn until dusk, offering a serene, free-of-charge escape into the heart of Chicago’s natural beauty.
