Who would have guessed longtime Trotter's chef Matthias Merges would find his calling checking IDs at the door of a Logan Square bar? Granted, his is not just any bar: Here, barkeep Alex Bachman combines his penchant for unusual ingredients (a syrup made from maidenhair ferns, say) with an uncanny sense of balance, turning out creations that both pay homage to and defy tradition—often simultaneously. Though Billy Sunday is squarely a bar, the food is a worthy companion to the drinks.

We went here after a gala to grab a couple of quick drinks. The bar is pretty small and intimate. They have a great bar selection and offer some small bites. I would not come here to eat for the night but perhaps before a show or after dinner. The place lends itself to promote conversation. It would be easy to get a groups of friends or go on a date here. Our server was very polite, well informed and had great suggestions. I was impressed with their cheese assortment and felt it complimented our drinks. We also got the bread board which was okay. The sides that came with it were a little on the greener side with some mint/herbs. It was not my favorite dish. The cocktails themselves were well mixed, refreshing and delightful.
Really great bar with staff that really know everything about the cocktails. The cheese plate is pretty much heaven.
Billy Sunday is a very nice bar with great cocktails to choose from and some intriguing snacks. This tends to be a nice, upscale choice for people-watching (lots of first dates) too.
