Set right in the heart of Wicker Park, this venue has a place for those seeking concerts–and for those simply seeking beer. The upstairs is devoted to a live stage, which features heavy rock and hip hop acts nightly, while the downstairs bar serves as a cozy den for a weekly lineup of reggae and house nights. Subterranean is also one of the best places in town for 17-and-up shows.

One of my favorite small venues in the city. The two level venue has bars on both floors, and very different feels. The bottom floor is your traditional small venue where everyone is packing in. Then you can take the stairs to the second floor which is more of an open balcony feeling that looks down on the crowd and band. They normally have a few chairs and tables up there if you're looking to relax a little more...I recommend getting there early for that because they go quick! This is one of the last standing great venues in Chicago and I hope it is around for a long time. If you ever have the chance to see a show there, you have to check it out at least once.

If you're looking for a cheap beer and good local music, Subterranean is worth checking out. It's narrow halls turn every show into an intimate affair, and the second floor balcony offers a birds eye view of both the stage and crowd. Just don't stop and try to watch the show from the stairs...You will be ushered along.
