Ambition has gotten the best of this corner bar (situated on the “point” where DesPlaines, Kinzie and Milwaukee meet): the beers are craft and seasonal, the burgers are topped with arugula and cream cheese, and the Manhattans are made with Rittenhouse Rye and Carpano Antica vermouth. Yet the Point can’t quite live up to its gastropub aspirations. Maybe it’s the deafening music and preponderance of numbingly bright TVs; perhaps it’s the unbalanced cocktails. Or maybe some places are simply better off as average neighborhood bars.
