When Slippery Slope opened last winter in Logan Square, we knew there would be a second floor with a different concept but didn't know the theme until last week—the Heavy Feather is going to offer '70s-themed drinks when it opens on July 2.
Doug Phillips, the beverage director at Slippery Slope, is handling the menu upstairs as well, and it includes mostly $10 cocktails and a couple $12 drinks. The '70s isn't exactly regarded as the best era for cocktails, but lately bartenders have started improving upon drinks of the decade with better ingredients. And this isn't Chicago's first '70s-era bar—Jimmy has a '70s decor theme, though the drinks are much more contemporary.
The Heavy Feather menu includes classics like an Old Fashioned, an amaretto sour and a grasshopper ice cream drink. There are also some local products used—the BroVo Boomerang is a cherry liqueur made by the Aviary's Micah Melton, Lucky Falernum is a falernum that Danny Shapiro made with BroVo, and Scofflaw Old Tom Gin is made with North Shore Distillery.
Expect the space to be casual but comfortable (like Scofflaw and Sink|Swim, the group's other projects), with gold mirrors and leather booths. Hours are Thursday-Sunday from 8pm-2am.
