Face of the Hood: Kristen Kaza, Logan Square

If you want to get a sense of what Logan Square in 2015 is all about, look no further than party producer extraordinaire Kristen Kaza. The Vermont native has lived in Chicago for 12 years and moved into her apartment on Logan Boulevard with her partner, Moll Nye, and her German shepherd–husky mix, Demi, in 2014.

Logan is a hip neighborhood, and Kaza might be its hippest resident. If there’s a cool event in the area, she’s probably attending or organizing it. Her monthly R&B dance party SloMo, Slow Jams for Homos (and Their Fans), at the Whistler (2421 N Milwaukee Ave) celebrated its fourth anniversary in August. She describes the event as “a celebration of R&B music and a space for the queer community that feels safe but also sexy and fun.”

“I love the spirit that this neighborhood has,” she says. “The support of the arts and the sense of alliance and community remind me of Burlington, Vermont, where I grew up.”
