Ongoing improvements to the Lakefront Trail—including splitting it into separate paths for bikes and pedestrians—will lead to reroutes starting May 22 between North Avenue and Diversey Street on the North Side, DNAinfo reported this morning.

Cyclists, skaters, runners and walkers will all be routed west of Lake Shore Drive at North Avenue, with the detour continuing west of Diversey Harbor before rejoining the trail east of Lake Shore Drive at Diversey. See a PDF map of the detour route here. Access to North Avenue Beach will still be available at North Avenue, La Salle Drive and the pedestrian bridge to the north.

Construction will also take place on the trail between Ohio Street Beach and Oak Street Beach beginning next week, but a lane will remain open. Construction on both segments is expected to be completed later this summer.

Separation of the trail along another segment, from 35th Street to 41st Street, is expected to be completed by Memorial Day, city officials said. Work on another South Side segment, from 41st Street to 56th Street, will begin this summer and continue into the fall.
