A massive Mariano’s will open at 3030 N Broadway in Lakeview on August 2. After breaking ground in February, the space has turned into a concrete five-story shopping center set to house a new location for the grocery chain, an XSport Fitness, retail shops and a parking garage. Even though it's a bit unsightly now, the finished building design aims for a sociable town center atmosphere.

The Mariano’s will occupy the first and second levels of the building, totaling about 73,000 square feet. A Starbuck’s, PNC Bank and other retail shops will fill the ground level and more than 250 parking spots will be available as well. The area will have a pedestrian-friendly design, which includes a community park with trees, greenery and outdoor seating.

The lot on Broadway that the Mariano's will occupy has been sad and empty since 2005, when a Dominick's at the location went up in flames. The new store will fill that void, and East Lakeview residents in the area will have easy access to a grocery store for the first time in a decade.
