Queen Elizabeth II buys $1.57 million condo in Chicago

The only thing is—she's not living in it.

Queen Elizabeth II, or likely one of her administrators, purchased the condo in her name for one Roy Norton, a Canadian consul. Why Canada? Well, the Queen remains constitutional royalty in Canada, where her title is Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada.

Despite the Canadian connection, the building is more befitting of England. The 26th floor apartment at 360 E Randolph St is named The Buckingham. The building gets its name from the charming view its units contain overlooking Grant Park and the Buckingham Fountain.

The three-bed, three-bath condo is actually a downgrade for the Canadian consul. Previously, he was quartered in a five-bed, 4,700-square-foot condo. That property recently went on the market for $2.3 million, reports Crain's, who also originally reported the Queen's new purchase. At 2,600 square feet, the consul's living space is nearly halved in his new pad.

Odds are Queen Elizabeth won't be paying Chicago a visit anytime soon though. She hasn't been here since 1959, which was the first time British royalty stepped foot in Chicago. More than a million people greeted her.
