Steppenwolf Theatre Company's longtime artistic director, Martha Lavey, is recovering from a stroke suffered Monday evening, according to a statement released by the theater today.

"She is showing clear improvements each day, and her family is in Chicago by her side and has requested that everyone respect her privacy at this crucial time in her recovery process," the statement reads in part.

Lavey, who's set to hand over Steppenwolf's artistic reins to Anna D. Shapiro at the end of the summer, was recently announced to appear in the cast of Domesticated by fellow ensemble member Bruce Norris, set to open in December. Steppenwolf has set up an e-mail address for well wishes: getwellmartha@steppenwolf.org.
