The Chicago Comedy Film Festival has given our city and filmmakers a way to celebrate both independent and international comedy films that don’t always get a lot of love. This weekend, we can recognize the variety of great films being made, plus laugh our asses off as part of the fest’s fifth year.

The two-day comedy festival is packed with full-length features and themed shorts programs, including the “Fast, Fierce and Freaky” (Fri 9:30pm) shorts screening, and “Sex and Modern Love” (Sat 5pm) program. The festival presents a fantastic lineup with many Chicago premieres. Get a dose of dark comedy with the local indie Killing Poe (Fri 5:30pm), bust a gut as two backpacking Australians find themselves in turtle-racing debt in Winning Formula (Fri 9pm), and fantasy lovers won’t want to miss the affectionate genre-spoofing Dragon Warriors (Sat 8pm).

Expand your comedy horizon beyond cookie-cutter romcoms and sitcom reruns to discover what locals, students and international filmmakers are creating. Oh, and laugh a ton too. Check out the full schedule here. (The New 400 Theater, 6746 N Sheridan Rd, Fri & Sat. $17 Friday pass, $27 Sunday pass)
