1. Be a writer

See Chicago through the eyes of the city's diverse and inspiring writers at the Chicago Authored exhibit. In a multimedia display, explore literary giants and contemporary authors of Chicago. Add your own voice by writing a postcard or arranging magnetic poetry strips in this interactive exhibit. (Chicago History Museum, 1601 N Clark St, Fri & Sat 9:30–4pm, Sun noon–5pm. $14 general, $12 students)

2. Embrace the frost

Brave the cold at Frost Fest and sip on more than 40 craft beers from local breweries during two three-hour tasting sessions. Don't worry—it takes place in an enormous heated tent with food trucks and live music on the scene. (Halsted St at Waveland Ave, Sat 1–4pm and 6–9pm. $40 door)

3. Jam out at the Riviera Theatre

This weekend Hoodie Allen is taking the stage with SuperDuperKyle and Black Bear. This rising Southern California rapper's glossy hipster hip-hop is sure to stick with you even after the show. (The Riviera Theatre, 4746 N Racine Ave, Sat 7pm. $30)

4. Laugh with your buddies

Sneak up to the third floor of the Flat Iron Arts Building for the Yeah Buddy Awesome Time Comedy Show. This indie comedy show is a mix of improv veterans, stand-up newbies and nontraditional acts. The show is free and BYOB—what more can you ask for? (Brainstorm Comics, 1579 N Milwaukee Ave, Sat 8:30pm. Free)

5. Love yourself

Watch a journey of transformation onstage at the Rivendell Theatre in Body/Courage. This play, written and performed by Danielle Pinnock, explores a wide array of body image issues through transfixing stories and acting. (Rivendell Theatre, 5779 N Ridge Ave, Fri & Sat 8pm. $32–35)
