1. Vintage Garage

Vintage vendors pack three levels of an Uptown parking garage with Midcentury modern items they've been hoarding. Find amazing '50s furniture or timeless '60s decor to close out you're weekend. (5051 N Broadway, Sun 10am5pm. $5)

2. Listen to some folk

The Punch Brothers come to Chicago with forward-thinking folk music featuring bluegrass instrumentation and adventurous chamber music arrangements. (Thalia Hall, 1807 S Allport St, Fri & Sat 8pm. $33, $50 balcony)

3. Hone your craft

If you create, perform or produce you’ll want to immerse yourself in the largest free convention for artists and creative entrepreneurs. You’ll be able to get advice from industry experts, discover emerging talent, showcase your art, workshop with choreographers and even browse through a pop-up Dose Market. (Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E Washington St, Fri–Sun. Free)

4. Head to an alley party

ACTIVATE transforms Chicago alleys into a celebration of local art, music and performances every month. This summer the event takes on the theme of the five senses. Attendees will be invited to touch artwork, feel inflatable installations, play in a giant ball pit and explore the sense of touch. (8th Street, 205 E 8th Street, Fri 5pm. Free)

5. BookCon

The second annual BookCon arrives in Chicago with a mash-up of storytelling and pop culture. Guests can look forward to events such as author Q&As, literary trivia games, panel discussions and maybe get to see special guests like Samantha Bee, Chris O'Dowd or Sabaa Tahir. (McCormick Place, 2301 S Lake Shore Dr, Sat 10am–6pm. $30 adult, $5 child)
