1. Attend a multifaceted music festvial

Pitchfork is a high point in the summer for all music lovers, with a tightly-curated lineup that includes acts like Beach House, Carly Rae Jepsen, Julia Holter, Sufjan Stevens, Twin Peaks and Jeremih. (Union Park, 1501 W Randolph St, Fri 3pm, Sat–Sun noon. $165 weekend pass, $65 single day)

2. Rock out in the open air

Get ready to headbang at Chicago’s first music festival devoted to modern rock and metal, Chicago Open Air. Bands like Rammstein, Disturbed and Slipknot will headline while guests enjoy craft beer and cuisine described as "Gourmet Man Food." (Toyota Park, 7000 S Harlem Ave, Fri–Sun 11:00am-11pm. $109.50–$399.50)

3. Celebrate Chinese culture

Enter under the iconic Chinatown archway and explore the best of this neighborhood at the Chinatown Summer Fair. Watch the Lion Dance Procession, see a martial arts demonstration and sample food, art and music. (Wentworth Ave and Cermak Rd, Sun 10am. Free)

4. Spike it at a volleyball tournament

The Chicago Sport and Social Club is hosting the Volleywood Beach Bash and Tournament, where more than 300 teams compete, dance to DJs and indulge in mini brisket sliders, pulled pork sandwiches, sangria and beer. (North Avenue Beach, 1600 N Lake Shore Dr, Sat noon. $25–$60)

5. Score awesome vintage pieces

Once a month the Vintage Garage sets up shop with hundreds of vendors selling one-of-a-kind pieces. The theme for this month is a rockabilly and tiki market, so perhaps you’ll leave with the perfect island-themed mug set for your patio. (Vintage Garage, 5051 N Broadway, Sun 10am. $5)
