The five best things to do this weekend in Chicago

1. Catch some serious street style

Head to Boystown to see the freakiest and most fabulous costumes at the Northalsted Halloween Parade. This wonderful cross-section of Chicagoans fills the street with incredible drag queens, marvelous monsters and anything in between. When it comes to Chicago’s costume events, there’s no contest. (Belmont Ave and Halsted St, Sat 4pm. Free)

2. See an EDM freak show

Let your freak flag fly at React Presents' annual EDM Halloween party, Freaky Deaky, with three nights of major headliners like Bassnectar, Armin Van Buuren and Pretty Lights (not to mention Flying Lotus, Action Bronson and Benny Benassi). The incredible lineup brings the noise so you’d better bring your costume A-game to match. (Toyota Park, 7000 S Harlem Ave, Fri–Sun 2pm. Day passes $89–$99)

3. Get engaged

Fill your weekend with incredible speaker events at the Chicago Humanities Festival bringing more than 80 engaging writers, activists, humorists and storytellers to an auditorium near you. While many events sold out in a flash, there are many stimulating events you can still attend. (See site for event locations and schedule. Fri–Sun. Free-$38 per event)

4. Get punk’d

For any other concert, the Japanese punk foursome Peelander-Z would likely be performing as costume-clad action heroes, so their Halloween show is a matter of excellent timing. For a unique treat, celebrate Halloween with this joyous and high-energy show. (Reggie’s Music Joint, 2105 S State St, Sat 8pm. $12, advanced $10)

5. Meet a real stand-up guy

You’ve got two more chances to see one of the hardest working stand-ups around this weekend, so don’t blow it. Boston’s Bill Burr brings his energy, rage and charm to the Chicago Theatre. If laughter is the best medicine, prepare to overdose. (Chicago Theatre, 175 N State St, Fri & Sat 8pm. $45–$55)
