The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. See the original tragic romance

You've read the play, now see Romeo and Juliet performed before your eyes. Though the tale of star-crossed lovers has been adapted innumerable times, this version is special. The play is performed in French and features a live orchestra and swordplay. (Civic Opera House, 20 N Wacker Dr, 7:30pm. $20–$239)

2. Go to the show

Minneapolis's Poliça comes to Chicago in support of the new album United Crushers, performing an intimate show at Schubas before returning in April to play Thalia Hall. The synth-pop band is a must-see, having won over big names like Bon Iver and Jay-Z. (Schubas, 3159 N Southport Ave, 8pm. $22)

3. Laugh at the laser show

It's not often that laser beams and comedy are paired together. Nonetheless, Chicago is the kind of comedy town that can embrace such a concept. Performance artist Chris Fair draws characters on a glow-in-the-dark screen as part of a comedic story. (MCL Chicago, 3110 N Sheffield Ave, 10pm. $10)
