The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. Get lost in the flowers

This is the last week for the Chicago Botanic Garden's annual orchid show, which packs greenhouses with more than 10,000 flower specimens. The orchid is one of the oldest and most diverse flower species in the world, making this one-of-a-kind show an absolute feast for the eyes. (Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Rd, Glencoe, 10am. $10, members $8, kids and seniors $8)

2. Rock out, garage-style

SoCal garage rocker Ty Segall comes to Chicago for the first of two nights at Thalia Hall in support of his latest LP, Emotional Mugger. Expect much of tonight's material to come from that release, which layers lyrical themes of addiction and instant gratification over synth lines and guitar riffs. (Thalia Hall, 1807 S Allport St, 9pm. $25, balcony $28)

3. Chow down

Fittingly, the fourth-annual Chowdah Fest takes place on the coast of Lake Michigan at the Columbia Yacht Club, where some of Chicago's favorite chefs face off to see who makes the best chowder of any style. Participating chefs include David Dworshak of Bar Takito, The Mazza brothers of New England Seafood Co., J Hart Wolf of Da Lobsta and others. (Columbia Yacht Club, 111 N Lake Shore Dr, 6:30pm. $50)
