1. See art from a new perspective

This series of paintings features African-American figures where they would be excluded historically. The artist, Kerry James Marshall, displays his work from the past 35 years. (Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E Chicago Ave, 10am. $7–$12)

2. Get a lesson in design

The Art Institute will soon have a permanent design exhibition exploring different eras. Get a taste of what the full exhibition will be like at Design Episodes: The Modern Chair, an ongoing show featuring shiny modern chairs to fancy fur-covered lounge chairs. (Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S Michigan Ave, 10:30am. $14–$25)

3. Head to the theater

Upgrade your dinner and a movie and see a feel-good play like Constellations. A courtship begins between a theoretical physicist and a beekeeper and doesn’t play out exactly as you’d expect. (Steppenwolf Theatre Company, 1650 N Halsted St, 7:30pm. $20–$89)
