The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. How about some experimentation?

The hushed museum soundscape of muffled coughs and softly echoing footsteps might be appropriate for viewing impressionist lily ponds, but “The Freedom Principle: Experiments in Art and Music, 1965 to Now,” is noisy and alive. Viewers will experience sounds that are as vital as the pieces on display, as the exhibit merges Chicago’s legacy of avant-garde jazz with the visual art that was shaped by the same scene. “The Freedom Principle” is loud, brash and, yes, sophisticated. (Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E Chicago Ave, 10am-5pm. $5 suggested admission)

2. Be the star in your favorite movie

If you’re a film buff looking to upgrade from sloppy sing-alongs and tone-deaf tributes, then Movieoke is about to become your favorite monthly event. Have you memorized Alec Baldwin’s Glengarry Glen Ross speech or forced loved ones to suffer your “best” Walken impression? Head to the Whistler and speak your heart out along with your favorite film. The event is for ages 21 and over. (The Whistler, 2421 N Milwaukee Ave, 9pm. Free)

3. Twist and Sprout with the kids

Let your little ones frolic among the flowers at the botanic garden. This event features the Old Town School of Folk Music presenting  “Grow, Worm, Grow! A Sensory Celebration Concert for All!” a musical experience meant to support and delight children with sensitivities or special needs. Pack a picnic and rock out with the whole family to the free shows. (Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Rd, noon–5pm. Free)
