The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. Go a little overboard with your kids

Take your kids to the Children’s Museum for a boatload of fun at “Boats!” the very interactive nautical exhibit where kids can play pretend with all the props. They can raise the sails, paddle a kayak, grab a pole at the bait and tackle shop and more. (Chicago Children's Museum, Navy Pier, 700 E Grand Ave, 10am. $14 admission)

2. Prepare to be amazed

Enter the Cabinet of Curiosities in “Kurios,” one of the latest shows from Cirque du Soleil. Join a time and space bending inventor in this steampunk-styled show of wild acts and acrobatics. The show is written and directed by Michel Laprise, who directed Madonna’s Superbowl halftime show and The MDNA Tour—so the man knows how to entertain. (United Center, 1901 W Madison St, 8pm. $35–135)

3. Shedd your midweek stress

Let your daytime responsibilities drift away with cocktails, jazz and a whole lot of marine life with the weekly hump day series Jazzin’ at the Shedd. Jazzin’ tickets include access to the Abbott Oceanarium, special exhibit “Amphibians,” the Wild Reef and outdoor terraces. Throw down three bucks to stroke the rays at Stingray Touch. Tonight, Jazzin' gets extra funky with Detour JazFunk, the William Boris Trio and Tim Fitzgerald Duo. (Shedd Aquarium, 1200 S Lake Shore Dr, 5pm. $20, in advance $18)
