The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. Go low-budget

Watch as multidisciplinary artist Keren Cytter turns cinematic convention upside down with her low-budget and intentionally lo-fi videos recreating standard film genres. View drawings and videos inspired by classic film genres, many filmed in her own apartment as well as in places like her large-scale MCA exhibition. If you’re a Miranda July fan, get ready to fall for this kitschy New York-based contemporary. (Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E Chicago Ave, 10am-5pm. $12 suggested admission)

2. Give (this 11-)piece a chance

Experience one of world music’s most exciting and lively acts at the Old Town School of Folk Music tonight where Tinariwen, an 11-piece Tuareg band from the Sahara, will perform its unique and mesmerizing blend of Saharan music and electric guitar rock. If you’ve never heard of the group, trust us, this is a live show you won’t want to miss. (Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N Lincoln Ave, 8pm. $36-$38)

3. Get a glimpse

Pop into Comfort Station (you know, the old-timey house-looking structure in the heart of Logan Square that functions as a secret gallery, yeah that one) to catch a glimpse of the wonderfully intimate and truly eclectic Vernacular Photography Festival featuring collections of snapshots taken by lesser known photographers, notably North Shore nanny Vivian Maier, in this extensive collection of vintage photos and home movies. The festival ends Sunday, so what are you waiting for? (Comfort Station, 2579 N Milwaukee Ave, 8-9:30pm. Free)
