The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. Be tempted

See the new production of The Tempest at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Seriously. See it. The creative and absorbing adapted production is magical, literally—the show was co-adapted by Aaron Posner (writer of Stupid Fucking Bird) and Teller (the silent half of comic magic duo Penn & Teller) and features depression-era illusionists. This steampunky revamp of the Bard’s stormy classic featuring music by Tom Waits is electric. (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, 800 E Grand Ave, 7:30pm. $48–$78)

2. Be groovy

Ride the retro wave of the modern psychedelic music at Metro Chicago. Keep the summer vibe going into autumn with the beachy California outfit The Growlers. (Metro Chicago, 3730 N Clark St, 8:30pm. $19)

3. Be dramatic

Brush off your Italian and polish your tiny binoculars for a lavish night at the Lyric Opera, staging Mozart’s well-known and well-loved dramedy The Marriage of Figaro, where you can see Adam Plachetka make his Lyric debut in the title role. English subtitles will be provided, you know, just in case. (The Civic Opera House, 20 N Wacker Dr, 7:30pm. $20–$249)
