1. Unplug

The New Jersey indie rockers of Yo La Tengo put on a special performance at the Vic following the release of their 14th record, Stuff Like That There, a reimagining of their earlier work. Former lead guitarist Dave Schramm joins the band for the special acoustic show. (Vic Theatre, 3145 N Sheffield Ave, 8pm. $22.50)

2. See a meta and moving production

In The Play About My Dad, real-life playwright Boo Killebrew creates a play within a play, weaving the overarching story of a father-daughter collaboration together with loosely connected “snapshots” of those who stayed in Mississippi to weather Hurricane Katrina. Raven Theatre’s harrowing and deeply felt production is one you won’t want to miss. (Raven Theatre, 6157 N Clark St, 8pm. $42, seniors $37, students $18)

3. Get thee to an improv show

You don’t have to be a lit nerd or improv fan to be completely won over by the masterful, long-running Improvised Shakespeare Co. The team’s mastery of Shakespearean tropes, language and archetypes is impressive and matched by their improv skills in this raucous and laugh out loud play. (iO, Del Close Theater, 1501 N Kingsbury St, 8pm. $16)
