Needle me this
Fan-created film art is usually lame, but then there are British designer Matt Needle’s surprisingly classy prints. The Hitchcock motif, above, strikes just the right balance between homage and ingenuity, and Needle’s site also features Kubrick-, Inception– and Boardwalk Empire–inspired posters. Pricing varies from 20 to 25 pounds, or roughly $32 to $40. Available at needledesign.bigcartel.com.

Sterling’s pounds
“Ida was a hellcat? Cooper has no balls? Roger’s writing a book?” Indeed he is—or at least, someone was, under Roger’s name—since Sterling’s Gold: Wit and Wisdom of an Ad Man ($16.95) is now available for sale. Mad Men has been as great as any movie in the last year. Will Sterling’s memoir be as good as any book? Available at amazon.com and elsewhere.

Pack rats ’r’ us
If your friends are seriously obsessed with movies—let’s say, to the point where they can rattle off Oscar winners by year or can expound at length on exactly how the video version of The Shining differs from the theatrical cuts—they’re probably also pack rats. That’s just the way our minds work. Thus, your friends probably have a lot of old ticket stubs cluttering their apartments. So buy each one a ticket stub diary ($10), which is much cheaper than a filing cabinet and guaranteed to get good use. Available at uncommongoods.com.

Guilt of admission
The ShowPlace ICON still has that new-theater smell, and it’s easy to like its plush seats, excellent sightlines and intra-cinema bar. It is hard, however, to get behind the ticket prices, which run as high as $17.50 for “VIP seating.” So more than with most theaters, a gift card (dollar amount of your choosing) would probably seem thoughtful in this case. Available at kerasotes.com.
