Since starting the beat-centric L.A.-based Stones Throw Records in 1996, DJ, producer and label honcho Peanut Butter Wolf has garnered about as much cred as anyone can in the business without becoming a household name. Witness the cavalcade of big-name talking-heads—Mike D, Snoop Dogg, Kanye, Common, Questlove—who show up in director Jeff Broadway's doc to laud PB's uncanny ability to cultivate a roster of talent as if he were crate-digging for vinyl dusties. His label has put out records by J Dilla, Madlib, Mayer Hawthorne, Dam-Funk and many other artists who have more esteem among DJs and record collectors than they do commercial appeal but have found an encouraging and collaborative home at Stones Throw.
