Matt Kirouac on Molly’s Cupcakes

“I’ve had cupcakes before that are too dry, and the icing gets in my way—it’s messy. But size-wise, flavor-wise, moisture-[wise], everything is just right. Every time I’ve gone it’s been fantastic customer service. The people behind the counter seem like they’re happy to be there, happy to assist you. I feel like with their customer service and what they’re offering, they’ll make it. They have what it takes.”

“I’m just a fan of the classic mojito—sometimes you can’t go wrong with the classics. In this case, I just don’t think I’ve had one better. I’m sure I’ve had them at a dozen or more places over the years, and [Seger’s mojito] is just outstanding—it’s the perfect combination of ingredients. Each element works with the others so well—it’s like a great piece of music. [Watching him,] you get a sense that he really knows what he’s doing; you just know that it’s a professional at work.”

“We live within walking distance of their old location. We were there all the time, and when it closed, [my wife] really did cry. We kept looking for other Ethiopian restaurants that were as good, and we just couldn’t find them. And then, it reopened. Luckily, it reopened right near where our daughter takes piano lessons. So a few times a month I take the train up to Evanston and I meet my wife and daughter after the piano lesson so we can eat there. The food’s just amazing. And then the service is friendly. The price is also incredibly reasonable.”

“I think that a lot of bars have this processed feel, [but] Hopleaf seems natural and welcoming and just very homey-like. You can always go back there and feel welcomed and really comfortable there…. The first time I went, I remember there were so many selections and I didn’t really know a lot of them. [So] I just talked about it with my server…they seemed really accommodating and knowledgeable about their beer selection.”
