The Whistler

WHISTLE STOP Pay attention to the cocktails, the American mircobrews and the outdoor patio if you must. But if you’re thinking of the Whistler as simply a bar, you’re kind of missing the point. Owners Robert Brenner and Billy Helmkamp (the guys behind Whistler Records, the home of music acts such as punk-rock-a-cappella-chorus Blue Ribbon Glee Club, pictured) see their project as a meeting place for creative minds first, a place to get toasted second. That’s why the space doubles as an art gallery, which will be curated by singer, artist and writer-around-town Josh Dumas, and why there’ll be live music, film screenings, poetry readings and other arts events almost every night. That’s not to say that you can’t just come in and have a drink, of course—they didn’t hire Paul Mcgee, former corporate mixologist for Wolfgang Puck, for nothing. It’s just that’s not the only thing they hope will stimulate you. 2421 N Milwaukee Ave between Fullerton Ave and Richmond St (773-227-3530).
