Lollapalooza 2011, Sunday: Gold Motel

Gold Motel hails from the Chicago suburbs, but its family-friendly pop songs (the freshly penned "Santa Cruz," "Safe in L.A.") have their heart in California. Actually, there's a bit of Laurel-Canyon-meets-London to the chirpy, boy-girl band. Live, the She & Him–isms have a slight Britpop bounce, bringing to mind Sleeper or Catatonia, especially on the new single, "Leave You in Love." But make no mistake, these are kids in love with their parents' Fleetwood Mac records. Mom even got a shout-out when singer Greta Morgan, a dead ringer for Jenny Lewis, told the crowd, "It's my mom's birthday. On the count of three, everyone say, Happy Birthday, Mom!" Aw, sweet. Broken up because Rilo Kiley broke up? Here's your ray of sunshine.
