Malkmus has been making Jicks albums for a greater time than he spent recording Pavement records. Weird. His solo career has veered from his distinct brand of erudite and whimsical deconstruction of classic rock to outright jam-band wankery. None of it has been mediocre, though its peaks never quite reach the valleys of Pavement. But the 47-year-old still has a cheeky, unfuckwithable way with words. Proof: His sixth Jicks outing is dubbed Wig Out at Jagbags. Typically, the quality of his curveball-throwing tunes correspond to the creative inanity of his album titles. (Pig Lib beats Mirror Traffic, easy.) So this should be a winner. That being said, I think I'd might rather read a novel by the guy in 2014 than hear more sidewinding guitar solos spinning down the Pavement.
