The viral West Coast coffee chain is eyeing a drive-thru-only outpost in Oswego, less than an hour from the city.

If you’re still sulking over the fact that the closest Dutch Bros. requires a road trip, this might finally ease the sting. The wildly popular West Coast drive-through coffee chain is eyeing a new location in Oswego, Illinois, putting it less than an hour from the city.
According to reporting from the Chicago Tribune, a drive-thru-only Dutch Bros Coffee has been proposed as part of a rezoning and annexation request now headed to the Oswego Planning and Zoning Commission. The site sits near Route 34 and Ogden Falls Boulevard on currently vacant land in unincorporated Kendall County.
The plan calls for a compact but mighty 989-square-foot building designed to keep traffic flowing. It’s a classic Dutch Bros. setup: no indoor seating, a heavy emphasis on drive-thru service, plus a walk-up window and a sidewalk wide enough for outdoor seating.
If approved, the coffee shop would sit on the western portion of a roughly two-acre site that’s slated for commercial use. A second one-acre lot could eventually be home to another retail building, though no specific plans have been filed for that piece yet. Village staff have already suggested removing future site plans to maintain flexibility and keep the focus squarely on the coffee.
Dutch Bros. has been inching eastward for years, but Illinois still counts just three locations statewide, making this potential Oswego outpost a big deal for Chicagoland fans. Founded in 1992 as a single espresso pushcart in Grants Pass, Oregon, the brand has grown into a viral, high-energy phenomenon known for friendly baristas, customizable drinks and a menu that goes far beyond standard coffee with blended drinks, smoothies, shakes and the chain’s cult-favorite Rebel Energy drinks.
The company now operates more than 1,000 locations nationwide and has leaned hard into its drive-thru-first model, which helps explain those famously long (but fast-moving) lines seen at new openings across the country.
Nothing is official just yet, but the proposal will be reviewed this week, marking a key step toward bringing Dutch Bros. closer to Chicago than ever before. If it clears the usual planning hurdles, southwest suburban coffee runs might soon become much more popular.
