Everything you need to see, buy and catch at the highly anticipated North American debut.

After debuting in Hokkaido in 2021 and touring across Japan over the last several years, the Pokémon Fossil Museum is finally making its North American debut right here in Chicago. Cocreated by the Field Museum, the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo, and the Pokémon Company International, the sprawling exhibition seamlessly bridges the gap between pop culture and hard science.
By comparing real-life prehistoric creatures directly with their fictional Pokémon inspirations, the exhibit makes complex concepts like comparative anatomy highly accessible. Here is exactly what to expect when you hit the exhibition floor.
The core of the exhibit features life-size, conceptual skeleton models of fossil Pokémon displayed side-by-side with the real-world prehistoric fossils that inspired them. To keep things clear for visitors, the museum uses a clever color-coded system: Real-world paleontology and dinosaur facts are strictly printed in red text, while Pokémon stats and fictional lore are printed in blue.
You’ll find Aerodactyl positioned next to pterosaurs, Omanyte compared to spiral-shelled ammonites, Aurorus matched with the sail-necked Amargasaurus, and Bastiodon juxtaposed with ceratopsian dinosaurs like the Triceratops. They even highlight “living fossils,” pairing Kabuto with horseshoe crabs and Relicanth with coelacanths. To tie it all together, they’ve given the staff an animated upgrade—actual Field Museum scientists, including chief preparator Akiko Shinya and associate curator Dr. Jingmai O’Connor, are illustrated as Pokémon trainers throughout the displays.
Because the Field Museum actively cocreated this specific iteration of the tour, they integrated their own world-renowned specimens into the layout to serve as the absolute centerpiece of the exhibition: a massive, direct comparison between a scientific cast of SUE the T. rex and its Pokémon counterpart, the T. rex–inspired Tyrantrum. Farther down the hall, you’ll also find the museum’s highly significant Chicago Archaeopteryx paired up alongside Archeops.
The activation elements are strong, so plan accordingly. As a major bonus for fans, the museum is giving away an exclusive “Pokémon Fossil Museum Archeops Promo Card” to ticket holders right at the exhibit, available while supplies last.
If you’re looking to shop, take note: Access to the dedicated store requires a paper voucher that is handed out only at the end of the exhibition walk-through. To deter resellers, there is a strict five-item limit per customer, and you can only purchase one Excavator Pikachu plush. (Pro tip: Reusable tote bags do not count toward your five-item limit).
Additionally, players of Pokémon GO can get in on the action, too. During operating hours, the Field Museum is geofenced for a localized event featuring in-game Excavator Pikachus and Mega Aerodactyl raids for attendees.
Sadly, there is no Pikachu Mold-A-Rama for the event.
